LactaRoute

A guide, checked October 2026

Lactation consultant software, compared

A handful of small teams build charting software for IBCLCs, and each has made different choices. Here is what each one does well and who it suits, from their own websites and App Store listings.

MilkNotes

Charting and practice software
Web, any device · Starter $29.99, Pro $59.99 a month

A web EHR for lactation consultants, doulas, childbirth educators and craniosacral therapists that runs in a browser on any device.

Where it shines

Charting that saves as you type, with a dictionary that remembers your own terms and dropdowns you set up your way. A parent portal for intake, the care plan and referrals. Video visits inside the web app, faxing of care plans and reports, a pump rental tracker and superbills. Plans start at $26.99 a month billed yearly, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and group discounts from three users.

Worth knowing

Its public pages describe superbills but not insurance claim submission. They don’t say how to export your clients or charts, so ask MilkNotes before you plan a move.

NuBloom

Charting and practice software
Web, nothing to install · $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly

Browser-based software for IBCLCs, solo or with a team, made by Digitus Data. Its own summary is “Booked, charted, and paid.”

Where it shines

LATCH and IBFAT scoring, mood screening, WHO growth charts with percentiles and home-visit service areas by ZIP code or radius. Charting keeps working with no signal in supported browsers. Superbills and claim tracking, a patient portal, video visits and prepaid packages, all in one plan, with a BAA signed for every practice.

Worth knowing

Insurance checks ($0.20 each) and accepted claims ($0.39 each) are billed by use, and text messages by usage at a rate its pricing page doesn’t list. Each billable seat after the first is $39 a month.

Mobile Lactation Consultant

Native app for iPhone, iPad and Mac
App Store · free to download · by Daly Enterprises

A native app for IBCLCs, CLCs, CBEs and CLEs, and the only charting tool here that installs on the device.

Where it shines

It works with no connection and syncs when you’re back online. History, breastfeeding, maternal and infant exams; a web portal for the family’s paperwork; CMS-1500 and UB-04 claim forms; and an AI feature that records the visit and drafts the charting. Records export as password-protected PDFs, and data exports to Excel, so the records can leave with you.

Worth knowing

Its subscription prices aren’t on the App Store listing, and the developer’s own pricing page looks older than the app. Ask them for current pricing.

LactApp Medical

Reference and consult app
iPhone and iPad · $14.99 a month or $79.99 a year · by FEM Health

The professional edition of LactApp, for midwives, nurses, pediatricians, lactation consultants and others who care for nursing families.

Where it shines

Consult guidance for professionals in English, Spanish and Portuguese, with a free version that allows unlimited consultations without entering a patient’s details.

Worth knowing

It’s a reference companion. Its listing doesn’t describe charts, records, scheduling or billing, so it sits beside an EHR rather than replacing one.

LactaRoute

EHR and practice software
Web · Free, Plus $39, Pro $89 a month

An EHR built by a working IBCLC for lactation consultants and doulas who see families at home.

Where it shines

Mother and baby charted as one dyad, with two linked records. LATCH, Hazelbaker, TABBY/BTAT and EPDS that add up as you chart, and WHO growth charts. Booking that allows for the drive, travel fees and mileage, a fax to the pediatrician from the chart, superbills and insurance claims through your clearinghouse, and a portal for every family. The scribe is opt-in, and a practice can hide every AI feature.

Worth knowing

No signal? A chart you have open keeps saving and syncs when you’re back in range, and today’s and tomorrow’s visits stay on your device. Opening another chart and signing need a connection. On Free, signed notes past three a month are $1.50 each.

Switching to LactaRoute

Whichever system you’re leaving, this is what comes across and how the first week goes.

What comes across

  • Your client list, from any system

Export a spreadsheet and LactaRoute matches the columns for you: names, contact details, address, date of birth, insurance, the baby’s name and birth date, due date and partner. You see the first rows as they’ll land before anything is saved, clients already here aren’t added twice, and columns you want to keep can come across as a note on the client.

  • IntakeQ and Practice Better, directly

Clients and appointments come straight across. From IntakeQ, completed intake forms, clinical notes and files come too, attached to each family as PDFs.

  • Your intake forms

Upload a form you already use as a PDF and it comes back as a draft you can edit. It goes live only when you switch it on. This step uses AI, and it’s hidden along with every other AI feature in a practice that turns them off.

  • Past charts

Attach earlier notes and reports to each family’s record as documents.

  • Anything unusual

If your export doesn’t look like anyone else’s, send it to us and we’ll map it for you.

Your first week

  • The first day

Import your clients, set your hours and the area you cover, and share your booking page.

  • Before the first booking

Intake and consent forms go out with each booking and follow up until they’re signed.

  • The first visit

Chart mother and baby together and send the report to the pediatrician from the chart.

  • When the trial ends

Fourteen days of everything in Pro, with no card. Then Free, with your clients and notes still there, or the plan that fits.

And if you leave, the owner can export the whole practice as one download.
